Damage to ankle ligaments in children is often diagnosed with errors. Thus, we have developed a new direction in the diagnosis of ankle ligament damage using mathematical modeling.
The objective of this paper is to analyze the stress-deformed condition of ankle legaments by conducting the research based on the use of a computer model of human ankle joint with the help of finite element method.
The damage of ligamentous apparatus of the ankle joint in children is one of the most difficult and unresolved problematics of traumatology and orthopedics. To date, there is no consensus program for the diagnosis and tactics of treatment for children with ankle ligament injuries. At the same time, there are not enough research papers devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of ankle ligament injuries.
In this paper the load forces were applied in such way so that they simulated a dislocation of an ankle in different directions. As a result, the exerted force expanded on the axial components. The magnitude of the applied load was appropriately selected so that it exceeded the weight of a person. In such way, the resulting picture of the stress distribution shows clearly marked areas with the highest joint magnitude in children and adolescents.
As a result of this study, the parametric models were built. They describe the ankle joint with major ligaments (anterior and posterior tibial-talar cord, calcaneotibial ligament cord, anterior and posterior talo-fibular ligaments, calcaneal-fibular ligament). Following the results of numerous studies, stress fields of equivalent stresses according to von-Mises were obtained for identification and assessment of the location of areas with peak stress values in ligaments.
The conducted study of stress-deformed condition of the ankle ligaments makes it possible to perform more qualitative diagnosis of injuries and traumas of ligamentous apparatus in children. The diagnostics allows to select necessary treatment tactics in the future, which may in turn reduce the probability of relapses, chronic diseases and injuries among children during their growth.
