The article presents updated practical recommendations of the American Gastroenterological Association on the long-term use of proton pump inhibitors (PPI). Ten recommendations, formulated by a group of reputable American gastroenterologists, led by D.E. Freedberg, are based on an extensive review and analysis of the quality of evidence of the absolute and relative risks and benefits of PPI therapy, given in the most significant current researches, and are designed to help clinicians choose the safest and most effective methods of treatment for patients with PPI.
