The purpose of this investigation was to study the efficiency of complex neurometabolic therapy with Citicoline and Actovegin at patients with acute primary and recurrent cerebral hemispheric ischemic stroke based on  multipurpose clinical neurological and neuropsychological examination.

The study included 186 patients (95 women and 91 men the average age 68,03±1,53 years) with acute primary and recurrent cerebral hemispheric ischemic stroke. All patients were divided into two groups of observations. The main group included 75 patients (38 men and 37 women, average age 68,3 ± 1,54 years) with recurrent cerebral hemispheric ischemic stroke and control group - 111 patients (53 men and 58 women, average age 66,7 ± 1,51 years) with primary cerebral hemispheric ischemic stroke. Patients of each observations group were also divided into two subgroups depending on the applied therapy: the first subgroup includes patients with primary and recurrent stroke, who received, in addition to the basic treatment a combination of Citicoline and Aktovegin. The second subgroup consisted of patients who have been assigned in addition to the basic treatment Citicoline.

The result of this investigation showed that combined neuroprotective, neurometabolic, angioprotective, antioxidant, neurotrophic effects of Citicoline and Aktovegin promoted greater regression of neurological and cognitive deficits, improve clinical and social outcome of the acute period of the disease and proved their superiority over mononeyroproteсtive therapy.
